All things BOSTON
"Love that dirty water, Boston, you're my home."
"London has Big Ben, Paris has the Eiffel Tower, we have the Citgo Sign."
Since 1965, the magnificent example of urban neon art has appeared
high above Kenmore Sq as a beacon to weary travellers, marathon
runners, and quite a few home runs from Fenway.
The sign replaced a 1940s wooden "Cities Services" (Citgo's former name) version.
The landmark is purely that, since Citgo stations no longer exist in Boston.
At 60 ft by 60 ft , the now computerized LCD sign is said to be the largest
in Boston. Glowing brightly from dusk to Midnight, it has made it through
hurricanes, blizzards, and Yankee games.

Marty's the Man
Marty Foley has been "Keeper of the Sign" since 1965.
His wooden swing offers him one of the best seats in town.

Some less-known Fenway Facts

"The Lone Red Seat" named such, after former sox slugger
Ted Williams' 502ft home run bounced off the head of a
dazed fan on June 9, 1946.
Speaking of Williams, the Bullpens at Fenway have often
been referred to as "Williamsburg" since they were put into place
in 1940 to allow Ted and other left-handed hitters to get
more home runs. The Yankees has "Ruthville"..

Fenway's "Green Monster" left field wall and manual scoreboard
displays morse code to those who know where to look. The code offers
up the intials of former sox owners, Thomas A. Yawkey and Jean R.Yawkey.
The wall also has a unique ladder to the right of the hanging red sox which
at one time was used by the grounds crew to retrieve balls from the net that
used to catch balls in order to prevent damage to neighboring storefronts.
Now that there are seats atop the wall, the net is gone, but the ladder remains
as a historic relic.
By the way, if you know where Jersey St. is in Boston,
you're probably really, really OLD..hee hee
Jersey St became Yawkey Way in 1976.

"Wally" Fenway's mascot was nicknamed after the 37ft left field wall that
he is believed to have lived in since 1940. He apparently survived for
50 yrs 'eating-up' balls hit by opposing teams that would easily have been
home runs in other parks.
In 1997, during a 50th anniversary celebration of the renovation that made
the wall green, Wally got up the courage to make an appearance.
He has been joyously interacting with fans ever since.

Do you remember the BOSTON Patriots playing football at Fenway? Yup, 1963-1968.
The goal posts were in front of the bullpens and the visitor dug-out. Seating in front of the monster?, hmm..

In 2010, even the BridgeStone Winter Classic came
to Fenway!
Thats right - HOCKEY..
